Best Parks and Green Spaces in Gosforth
From the vast Town Moor to hidden nature reserves and family-friendly playgrounds, Gosforth is one of Newcastle's greenest neighbourhoods.
Gosforth is one of the greenest suburbs in Newcastle — and that's not just because of the tree-lined avenues. Within walking distance of the High Street you have over a thousand acres of open moorland, a nature reserve dating back to 1929, a three-time Green Flag Award winner, and several well-equipped parks with playgrounds and cafes. If you're new to the area or just looking for somewhere different to walk, here's your guide.
The Town Moor
The Town Moor is Gosforth's most extraordinary asset. Covering around 1,000 acres of open grassland — larger than Hyde Park, Hampstead Heath, and New York's Central Park — it stretches from the edge of the city centre right up to Gosforth's doorstep. The land is protected common ground: Freemen of Newcastle have held grazing rights here since the 12th century, and cattle still graze from April to October every year.
For residents, it's a vast open space for walking, running, cycling, and dog walking. The Town Moor parkrun (every Saturday at 9am, free) is one of the most scenic 5K routes in the North East. In late June, The Hoppings — one of Europe's largest travelling fairs — sets up on the Moor for a week of rides, food stalls, and nostalgia.
Best for: Running, long walks, dog walking, sheer scale and open sky.
The Grove
The Grove is a much-loved pocket of green space on the edge of the Town Moor, between Elmfield Road and Moor Road North. It's a three-time Green Flag Award winner, thanks largely to the dedicated work of the Friends of the Grove volunteer group who maintain its wildflower areas, plant trees, and organise community events.
Mature trees, peaceful paths, and wildflower meadows give it a woodland feel despite being minutes from the High Street. It's a favourite with dog walkers and anyone who wants a quiet green escape without the scale of the Town Moor.
Best for: A peaceful walk, wildflowers, dog walking, community spirit.
Paddy Freeman's Park
Paddy Freeman's Park (officially Exhibition Park at its southern end) is the family favourite. The park has a lake, bowling green, tennis courts, a well-equipped playground with equipment for different age groups — including toddler swings, climbing frames, a play ship, and a bicycle roundabout — and a seasonal cafe.
It connects directly to Jesmond Dene on its south-west side, so you can extend a park visit into a longer walk through one of Newcastle's most beautiful valleys. Free entry, free tennis, and free basketball courts make it one of the most practical parks for families. An ice cream van is a regular visitor in warmer months.
Best for: Families with young children, playground, lake walks, connecting to Jesmond Dene.
Gosforth Central Park
Gosforth Central Park sits behind the Gosforth Shopping Centre and is a well-maintained, popular green space with good facilities. There are two hard courts for tennis and one for basketball (all free), a children's play area with equipment for different ages, and a cafe overlooking the park.
It's a convenient stop if you're already on the High Street — Etto on the Park cafe has its terrace overlooking the park, and the playground keeps children occupied while you finish a coffee. The Friends of Gosforth Central Park volunteer group looks after the planting and landscaping, which is always well done.
Best for: A quick green break from the High Street, tennis, families.
Gosforth Park Nature Reserve
The Gosforth Park Nature Reserve is a genuine hidden gem — one of the oldest nature reserves in North East England, established in 1924 and managed by the Natural History Society of Northumbria since 1929. Tucked away within the grounds of High Gosforth Park, it features ancient woodland, wetland, a lake, and a rich variety of birdlife.
Access is via NHSN membership or open days — it's not a drop-in park, but it rewards a visit. The reserve runs educational events for children and adults, guided walks, and wildlife surveys. If you're interested in nature, birdwatching, or just want to experience a genuinely wild green space minutes from the suburbs, this is it.
Best for: Birdwatching, nature walks, wildlife, a genuine escape.
