Admissions

Key Dates & How to Apply

School admissions in Newcastle are managed by the City Council. Here are the key things to know.

Nursery (age 3)

Apply directly to the school. Most nurseries take children from the term after their third birthday. Popular schools like The Elmfield have long waiting lists — register early, ideally during pregnancy.

Reception (age 4–5)

Apply through Newcastle City Council by January for a September start. You can list up to three preferences. Offers are made in April. Catchment distance is the main oversubscription criterion.

Middle School (age 9)

Apply through Newcastle City Council. Most children move to a middle school linked to their first school, but you can apply to any. The three Gosforth middle schools are all oversubscribed.

High School (age 13)

Gosforth Academy takes students from the three feeder middle schools. Places are allocated by feeder school priority, then siblings, then distance. The school is consistently oversubscribed.

In-Year Transfers

If you move to Gosforth mid-year, contact Newcastle City Council's admissions team or the school directly. Places depend on availability in the relevant year group.

Independent Schools

Newcastle School for Boys, Westfield School, and Akhurst School have their own admissions processes. Contact each school directly for registration, assessments, and fees.
