StarKids: The Learning App That Turns Daily Practice Into a Quest

StarKids is our own learning app for primary-age children, built to turn the nightly homework battle into a short daily quest kids actually ask to play. Here is what it does, who it is for, and how to try it free.

A quick note before anything else: StarKids is our own project. We built it, so treat this as us telling you about something we make, not an independent review. We mention it across our family and education guides for that reason, and we have kept this page honest about what it does and does not do so you can judge whether it suits your child.

StarKids is a learning app for families with primary-school-age children. The idea came from a familiar problem: the nightly tug of war over homework and practice. StarKids reframes that daily ten minutes as a short, game-like "Daily Quest" that children tend to come back to on their own, so consistency becomes the habit rather than the fight. You can try a real quest free, with no account, which is the quickest way to see whether it clicks with your child.

What the Daily Quest covers

Each Daily Quest is a short session broken into waves, with small mini-game interstitials and a space-adventure theme running through it. Across the quests, StarKids covers the core of primary learning: maths including addition, times tables and money, literacy and spelling, telling the time, geography, and even reading music. A star and streak reward system marks each day completed, which is what keeps children turning up without being nagged.

The aim is deliberately modest and sensible: a little every day. StarKids is not meant to replace school, reading together, or play. It is there to keep the core skills ticking over in the short daily window most families already have.

Teach first, then practise

New topics are introduced with teach-first cards before a child is ever quizzed on them, so the app is explaining rather than catching children out. From there, the difficulty adapts to how your child is doing. If they are struggling, the engine quietly eases the level down on its own so they are not left stuck or disheartened.

Crucially, level-ups work the other way round: they are always offered to you, the parent, as a suggestion to approve, never applied silently. That means no child is pushed beyond their depth without a grown-up deciding the moment is right, and you stay in control of the pace. It is the part we are most careful about, because confidence is easy to knock and hard to rebuild.

Who it is for

StarKids is built for primary-age children and the parents sitting alongside them. An age-based setup recommends the right subjects and starting levels in a single tap, so you are not left guessing where to begin. It suits families who want a calm, consistent daily habit rather than a crammed catch-up programme, and it works well next to the sort of low-pressure, little-and-often approach we recommend in our guides to times tables, homework and keeping learning going over the holidays.

Try it before you decide

The honest test is whether your child enjoys it, so StarKids has a free try-before-you-sign-up demo that drops you straight into a real quest with no account and nothing to set up. Give it five minutes with your child and you will know fairly quickly whether it is for you. When you are ready to look further, you can read more on the StarKids website.
