Best Schools in Gosforth: The Complete Guide

Gosforth's schools are among the best in Newcastle — but the unusual three-tier system can confuse newcomers. Here's how it works and what to expect.

Gosforth.org·

Schools are often the main reason families choose Gosforth. The area has some of the strongest Ofsted ratings in Newcastle, a wide choice at every level, and a three-tier school system that's unusual in England but works well once you understand it. If you're moving to the area or choosing a school for your child, here's everything you need to know.

The Three-Tier System Explained

Most of England uses a two-tier system: primary school (ages 4–11) then secondary school (ages 11–18). Gosforth is different. Newcastle's Gosforth area uses a three-tier system:

First School — Reception to Year 4 (ages 4–9) Middle School — Year 5 to Year 8 (ages 9–13) Secondary/High School — Year 9 to Year 13 (ages 13–18)

This means children transfer school twice rather than once — at the end of Year 4 and again at the end of Year 8. Each tier has its own set of schools with defined catchment areas.

Important: Transfer between tiers is not automatic. Parents must apply for a place at each stage through Newcastle City Council. Most first and middle schools have a named feeder school, but places are not guaranteed — catchment area is the primary admissions criterion.

First Schools (Ages 4–9)

Archibald First School

Archibald First School on Archibald Street is one of Gosforth's most sought-after schools. Its most recent Ofsted inspection (April 2025) rated Behaviour and Attitudes and Early Years Provision as Outstanding, with Quality of Education and Leadership rated Good. Previously rated Outstanding overall in 2015. The school is known for its nurturing, creative approach and excellent outdoor learning including forest school sessions. Places are in very high demand — check catchment carefully.

Best for: Outstanding early years, creative teaching, strong pastoral care.

Gosforth Park First School

Gosforth Park First School serves the northern end of Gosforth near the racecourse. Rated Good by Ofsted. A welcoming school with strong community links and a focus on outdoor learning. Less oversubscribed than Archibald, making it a practical choice for families in the High Gosforth area.

Best for: North Gosforth families, a friendly community school.

Grange First School

Grange First School on Norham Road is rated Good by Ofsted (most recent inspection November 2021). A well-established school with a strong local reputation.

Best for: Central Gosforth families, a reliable Good-rated school.

South Gosforth First School

South Gosforth First School is rated Good by Ofsted and serves the South Gosforth area. Well-placed for families near the Metro station and Haddricks Mill Road.

Best for: South Gosforth families, Metro-accessible.

St Charles' RC Primary

St Charles' RC Primary is a faith school rated Good, serving Catholic families across Gosforth. Unlike the other first schools, St Charles' covers the full primary age range (ages 3–11) and feeds directly into secondary rather than the three-tier system.

Best for: Catholic families, a full primary school within Gosforth.

Middle Schools (Ages 9–13)

Gosforth Central Middle School

Gosforth Central Middle School is rated Good by Ofsted. It takes children from Year 5 to Year 8 and feeds into Gosforth Academy. A popular choice with a strong academic track record and a wide range of extracurricular activities.

Best for: Central Gosforth, strong academics, good feeder to Gosforth Academy.

Gosforth East Middle School

Gosforth East Middle School is rated Good by Ofsted. It serves the eastern side of Gosforth and also feeds into Gosforth Academy. Well-regarded for both academic and pastoral support.

Best for: East Gosforth families, another strong feeder to the Academy.

Gosforth Junior High Academy

Gosforth Junior High Academy is rated Good by Ofsted and is part of the Gosforth Group of schools. It covers Years 5–8 and feeds into Gosforth Academy.

Best for: Families in the Junior High catchment, part of the Gosforth Group.

Secondary School (Ages 13–18)

Gosforth Academy

Gosforth Academy on the Great North Road is the main secondary school for the Gosforth area, rated Good by Ofsted (latest inspection 2022). The school takes students from Year 9 to Year 13 (ages 13–18) and has a strong sixth form with good A-level results and university progression rates.

The Academy has a specialist Language College status and a partnership with Newcastle Falcons rugby club. It has a notable alumni list including Alan Shearer, Mark Knopfler, and Donna Air. The campus is large and modern, located on the Great North Road with good bus and Metro access.

Best for: The main Gosforth secondary, strong sixth form, wide extracurricular programme.

Catchment Areas

Catchment is the single most important factor in school admissions in Gosforth. Popular first schools — particularly Archibald — have very tight catchment boundaries, and living just one street outside can mean missing out on a place.

Before buying or renting a property, check the specific catchment boundaries on the Newcastle City Council schools page or use Locrating to check which schools a postcode falls within. Catchment boundaries can shift slightly year to year based on demand, so always verify with the council directly.

For admissions enquiries, contact Newcastle City Council on 0191 232 8520.

Key Dates

Applications for first school (Reception) places typically open in November for the following September start. Middle school transfer applications open around the same time. Results are usually communicated in April. Late applications risk being placed at a school further from home.
