Gosforth.org·

Gosforth has five veterinary practices within the NE3 postcode, each with different strengths. One offers 24-hour emergency care on site, another specialises in exotic animals, and all handle the everyday needs of dogs, cats, and small pets. Here's the guide.

Blythman & Partners — Gosforth Veterinary Hospital

Blythman & Partners on Elsdon Road is the most established practice in the area and the only one with RCVS Hospital Status — the highest tier of veterinary accreditation. Critically, it's also the only practice in Gosforth that runs its own 24-hour emergency service on site, with dedicated nursing staff day and night. You won't be redirected to a distant out-of-hours centre at 2am.

It's one of the few remaining genuinely independent practices in Newcastle. All after-hours emergencies from their seven other branches across the region are directed here to the Gosforth hospital. Consultations run Monday to Friday 9-11am and 3-6pm, with weekend non-routine appointments available.

Best for: 24-hour emergency care, RCVS Hospital Status, independent practice.

Moorview Vets — Brunton Park

Moorview Vets at 32 Davenport Drive in Brunton Park is the practice to know about if you have exotic pets. They hold a formal "Exotic Friendly" designation and treat lizards, snakes, reptiles, and birds alongside the usual dogs, cats, and rabbits. They also have a "Rabbit Friendly" certification and CT scanning on site.

The practice has a 4.4/5 Google rating. Opening hours are Monday to Friday with a midday break (closed weekends). After-hours emergencies are directed to their 24/7 hospital in Cramlington. Part of the My Family Vets network.

Best for: Exotic animals, rabbit care, CT scanning, Brunton Park location.

Westway Vets — Kenton Park

Westway Vets at Kenton Park Shopping Centre is the closest practice to Gosforth High Street. Part of VetPartners (founded 1975, 19 branches across the region), they offer routine care, vaccinations, dental work, and diagnostics. Consultation hours are mornings and late afternoons Monday to Friday — worth noting the limited window if you need a midday appointment. After-hours emergencies go to their RCVS-accredited hospital on West Road in Fenham.

Best for: Closest to the High Street, established group practice, Kenton Park convenience.

My Family Vets — South Gosforth

My Family Vets at 6 Station Road in South Gosforth (formerly Croft Vets) offers a full range of small animal services including emergency care, vaccinations, neutering, dental, and surgery. Opening hours vary by day, with later sessions available on Thursdays (until 8pm). After-hours emergencies are directed to the My Family Vets hospital in Cramlington.

Best for: South Gosforth location, Thursday evening appointments, Metro-accessible.

Vets4Pets — Kingston Park

Vets4Pets inside Pets at Home at Kingston Retail Park has the longest weekday opening hours of any NE3 practice — 9am to 7pm Monday to Friday and 9am to 6pm on Saturdays. Locally owned despite the national branding, it has on-site digital X-ray, ultrasound, a laboratory, operating theatre, and isolation unit. RCVS Practice Standards accredited. Complete Care health plans start from £19.99/month.

Best for: Longest opening hours, Saturday appointments, on-site parking, health plan value.

Tips

Register before you need them. Don't wait for an emergency — register your pet with a local practice so your animal's records are on file when it matters.

Health plans. Most practices offer monthly payment plans covering vaccinations, flea and worm treatments, and health checks. These typically save 20-30% compared to paying for each treatment individually.

Exotic pets. If you have reptiles, birds, or unusual small animals, Moorview Vets in Brunton Park is the specialist choice.
