One of the best things about living in Gosforth is how much green space is within walking distance. You don't need to drive anywhere to find a proper walk — just step out of the door. Here are six routes that start from or near Gosforth, ranging from a quick 2km stroll to a half-day 10km circuit. Each one includes the distance, what to expect underfoot, and whether it works for dogs and pushchairs.

1. The Town Moor Loop

Distance: 5km (3.1 miles) | Time: 1–1.5 hours | Terrain: Tarmac and gravel paths, flat

Start at the Exhibition Park entrance (near Wylam Brewery) and follow the tarmac path anti-clockwise around the southern edge of the Town Moor. The route is a single 5km loop on well-maintained gravel and tarmac — the same course used by Town Moor parkrun. It's flat, open, and exposed to the elements, so dress for the wind. Cattle graze from April to October, so keep dogs under close control during those months.

Dog-friendly: Yes — dogs welcome but must be under close control near cattle (Apr–Oct). Pushchair-friendly: Yes — fully tarmac and gravel, flat throughout.

Best for: A quick, accessible loop. The default walk for anyone who lives near the Moor.

2. Jesmond Dene and Paddy Freeman's Park Circular

Distance: 3.4km (2.1 miles) | Time: 45 mins–1.5 hours | Terrain: Paved paths, some steps, mostly flat

Start at the Jesmond Dene Visitor Centre and head north through the wooded valley, passing waterfalls, bridges, and the old mill before climbing gently to Paddy Freeman's Park. Loop around the park (playground, lake, cafe) and return via the higher path along the edge of the Dene. Listed on AllTrails and rated easy.

Two cafes on the route and public toilets near the falls. The playground at Paddy Freeman's makes this a natural family circuit.

Dog-friendly: Yes — dogs welcome throughout Jesmond Dene and the park. Pushchair-friendly: Yes — well-maintained paths, relatively flat. Suitable for standard pushchairs.

Best for: Families with young children, a woodland walk with cafe stops.

3. The Full Jesmond Dene Valley Walk

Distance: 5.5km (3.4 miles) | Time: 1.5–2 hours | Terrain: Mix of paved and natural paths, some muddy sections, gentle hills

A longer version that explores the full length of Jesmond Dene — over three kilometres of wooded valley following the River Ouseburn from South Gosforth down to Jesmond Vale and Armstrong Park. You'll pass Pets Corner (free entry, great for kids), the waterfall, bridges, and some of the most beautiful woodland in any English city.

The return can loop through Jesmond itself (via Osborne Road for a coffee or lunch stop) or retrace your steps through the Dene. Paths can be muddy after rain, particularly in the lower sections — boots or sturdy shoes recommended in winter.

Dog-friendly: Yes — popular dog walking route throughout. Pushchair-friendly: Partial — the upper sections near Paddy Freeman's are fine, but the lower Dene has uneven natural paths and some steps. An off-road pushchair helps.

Best for: A proper woodland walk, Pets Corner with kids, connecting to Jesmond for lunch.

4. Town Moor to Exhibition Park and Back

Distance: 8km (5 miles) | Time: 2–2.5 hours | Terrain: Tarmac paths and grass, flat

A longer loop that combines the Town Moor with Exhibition Park and its surroundings. Start from the Gosforth end of the Moor (near the Blue House roundabout), head south across the open grassland following the tarmac paths, loop through Exhibition Park (bandstand, lake, cafe), and return via a different Moor path. You can extend it further by dropping into Leazes Park and the city centre if you want a longer day.

The whole route is on tarmac or well-worn grass paths and is completely flat. Exhibition Park cafe is a good halfway stop.

Dog-friendly: Yes — off-lead on the open Moor (watch for cattle Apr–Oct), on-lead in Exhibition Park. Pushchair-friendly: Yes — flat tarmac throughout.

Best for: A longer flat walk, combining open moorland with park scenery.

5. Gosforth Park Nature Reserve

Distance: 2km (1.2 miles) | Time: 1.5–2 hours (with wildlife stops) | Terrain: Woodland trails, boardwalks, muddy sections

A very different walk — short in distance but rich in wildlife. Gosforth Park Nature Reserve has 60 hectares of reed bed, open water, and mixed woodland, with over 1,600 species recorded. The circular route is just over a mile, but you'll want to pause at the hides and boardwalks to watch for bitterns, barn owls, roe deer, and rare orchids.

Access is via NHSN membership or visitor passes available on arrival. The terrain is uneven in places — mud, steep sections, and unsurfaced trails. Wellies or sturdy boots essential.

Dog-friendly: No — dogs are not permitted in the nature reserve. Pushchair-friendly: No — uneven terrain, mud, and steep sections. Not suitable for pushchairs.

Best for: Birdwatching, nature lovers, a genuinely wild green space minutes from the suburbs.

6. The Moor and Dene Circuit

Distance: 10km (6.2 miles) | Time: 2.5–3.5 hours | Terrain: Mixed — tarmac, gravel, woodland paths, some road sections

The big one. Start on the Town Moor and head south along the tarmac paths. At the southern edge, join the Great North Road briefly before dropping east into Jesmond Dene. Follow the Dene trails north through the full length of the valley — past the waterfall, Pets Corner, and up to Paddy Freeman's Park. From there, cross back to the Moor and return to your starting point.

This combines open moorland, urban streets, and deep woodland in a single circuit. It's the route that shows off everything Gosforth and Jesmond have to offer. The road section is short but necessary to link the two green spaces. Expect mud in the Dene after rain.

Dog-friendly: Mostly — dogs welcome on the Moor and in the Dene, but some road sections require leads. Pushchair-friendly: No — the Dene sections have uneven paths and steps. The Moor sections are fine.

Best for: A half-day adventure, experienced walkers, seeing everything in one circuit.
