Cycling in Gosforth

Routes, infrastructure, clubs, bike shops, and the ongoing debate about cycle lanes on the High Street. A practical guide for Gosforth cyclists.

Gosforth.org·

Cycling in Gosforth is a work in progress. The infrastructure is patchy — excellent in some places, non-existent in others — and the debate over cycle lanes on the High Street has been one of the most contentious local issues in years. Here's the practical guide.

The Cycle Lane Debate

The elephant in the room. In 2020-21, a protected northbound cycle lane was installed on Gosforth High Street between Salters Road and Regent Farm Road, separated from traffic by bolt-down kerbs. It was part of the pandemic-era active travel programme.

In 2025, Newcastle City Council proposed removing this cycle lane to make way for bus lanes, funded by the North East Mayor's Bus Service Improvement Plan. The plans also remove the painted southbound cycle lane. In exchange, cyclists would be directed to parallel streets.

The reaction has been fierce. SPACE for Gosforth (Safe Pedestrian and Cycling Environment for Gosforth) accused the council of "prioritising vehicle speed over road safety." Newcastle Cycling Campaign noted that only 60 metres of protected cycling infrastructure survives in the final designs across a 1km street. Councillor Colin Ferguson called it "the worst of all worlds." The debate is ongoing.

Meanwhile, Salters Bridge — the medieval bridge over the Ouseburn — was permanently closed to motor vehicles after an 18-month trial and consultation that generated 42,000 contributions. It remains open for walking and cycling.

What Infrastructure Exists

Broadway to Brunton Lane has completed, dedicated cycle tracks in both directions — the best section. Regent Centre to Broadway has painted lanes with some bolt-down kerb separation. South of Regent Centre toward Jesmond and the city centre, conditions are mixed. Blue House Roundabout at the southern end of Gosforth remains a difficult junction with no protected cycling infrastructure — plans to expand it in 2016 were scrapped after 2,000 people attended a "March for the Moor" protest.

Newcastle designates Great North Road as Cycle Route 4, a strategic north-south corridor. The city is one of eight Cycle Ambition Cities in England.

Routes

To the city centre: Great North Road is the direct route (~3 miles), but infrastructure varies by section. The ride is mostly flat.

To the coast: Head east from Newcastle along the Quayside paths to reach the River Tyne corridor. Hadrian's Cycleway (NCN 72) runs 11 miles from Newcastle to South Shields.

Into Northumberland: The Coast and Castles Cycle Route (192 miles, Newcastle to Edinburgh) heads north through Gosforth. The Great North Cycleway (NCN 725) is planned to run ~70km from Darlington to Blyth via Gosforth, though large sections are incomplete.

Family-friendly: Gosforth Park offers a quiet, largely traffic-free route around the racecourse and nature reserve area.

Clubs

[Gosforth Road Club](https://gosforthroadclub.com/) meets at Regent Centre with over 100 members aged 15 to mid-70s. Saturday rides of 45-55 miles at a sociable pace with a café stop. Shorter rides for newer cyclists on the 1st and 3rd Saturday. Wednesday evening rides too. Affiliated to British Cycling.

Gosforth Go Ride is the children's cycling club, meeting every Saturday morning (term time) at Exhibition Park. Registered with British Cycling.

Bike Parking

Regent Centre Metro station has free smart cycle lockers (4 lockers, 5 pods) activated with a Nexus smartcard. On-street cycle parking on the High Street is limited — the council's latest proposals include some new provision but detail is sparse.
