Gosforth Civic Theatre quadruples its fundraised income to £180,000

Gosforth Civic Theatre grew its fundraised income from £45,000 in 2024-25 to £180,000 in 2025-26, a 300% rise its chief executive puts down to honesty, investment and diversification.

Gosforth Civic Theatre on Regent Farm Road has caught the attention of the national charity press. Writing in Civil Society on 8 October, the theatre's chief executive Rob Huggins sets out how its fundraised income rose from £45,000 in 2024-25 to £180,000 in 2025-26, an increase of 300%.

Honesty, investment and diversification

Huggins credits three things: honesty, investment and diversification. When the grant-funding environment became tougher, he writes, the theatre "invested in dedicated fundraising capacity and told our community the unvarnished truth". He is candid that it was not all a neat plan: there was a strategy, but also "a pressing need to keep a brilliant theatre financially sustainable".

That shift away from relying on grants shows up elsewhere too. A recruitment advert for a new Director of Philanthropy and External Relations, which closed in July, said the theatre had "traditionally secured income through trusts and foundations" and was now diversifying, having set up new membership schemes, grown major donor relationships and run successful community fundraising campaigns.

Why the gap needs filling

The theatre's own figures explain the urgency. According to its support page, it generates close to £800,000 a year through performances, hires and trading, but around £500,000 still has to be raised each year through grants and donations. The venue is run by Liberdade Community Development Trust (registered charity 1163955), whose work with people with learning disabilities sits at the heart of the programme.

The latest push is the GCT Future Fund, a campaign to raise £100,000 to protect the venue and everything it makes possible. Alongside it, locals can join as GCT Champions and Trailblazers members, take out a corporate membership or name a seat to mark the theatre's tenth year.

A decade on Regent Farm Road

The growth comes in a landmark year. Last month we reported on the theatre marking ten years at the old Civic Hall and beating its Big Give target, one of the community campaigns that feeds into these numbers. For anyone who uses the cafe bar, catches a gig or brings the children to a half-term film, the message from the Civil Society piece is a simple one: the theatre's future depends on the people who use it, and so far they have answered the call.
