Gosforth Elite Valets: The Student Start-Up That Became a Local Success

How a chance question in a Gosforth back lane led 22-year-old Northumbria University graduate Louis Clougher to launch a mobile car valeting business — now with two vans and a growing team.

Most graduates spend months firing CVs into the void. Louis Clougher was cleaning his car in a Gosforth back lane when someone asked if he had a business card. He didn't — but that question changed everything.

From back lane to business

Clougher, now 22, was in his second year of a business management degree at Northumbria University when the idea for a mobile car valeting service first took shape. It was the summer of 2023, and he spotted a gap: people wanted a reliable, high-quality valet that came to them.

By spring 2024 he had launched Gosforth Elite Valets — self-funded, working out of the back of his own car with whatever equipment he could afford. Within months the demand was clear. The car had to go, replaced by a proper van fitted with professional-grade kit.

Growing fast

Two years on, the business has two vans on the road and a small team. Services range from a full premium valet at around £80 to ceramic coatings, paint correction, and comprehensive deep cleans for lease returns. They operate as a mobile service across Newcastle and beyond, but are also based at 75 Woodbine Road in Gosforth for drop-offs.

Customer reviews tell the story. Families with muddy kid seats, commuters wanting their alloys to sparkle, owners of high-end cars trusting their paintwork to a young team — the five-star feedback is consistent.

University support

Clougher graduated from Northumbria University last year with his business management degree, and credits the university's Business Clinic with supporting his start-up journey. But he thinks entrepreneurship should be a more mainstream path for graduates, not a wildcard that only a few take.

The timing is relevant. Figures released this week show that only 61% of graduates from North East universities were employed without further study within a year of leaving — and many face hundreds of unanswered job applications. Clougher's story, featured by the BBC this week, is a reminder that starting something yourself is a genuine alternative.
