Gosforth's Volunteer Groups
From park conservation to parkrun marshalling, folk sessions to nature reserves — here's how to get involved in Gosforth's volunteer community.
One of the things that makes Gosforth special is the strength of its volunteer community. From Friends groups maintaining the parks to sports clubs run entirely by volunteers, there's no shortage of ways to get involved. Here's the guide.
Friends of The Grove
Friends of The Grove organise seasonal planting events every spring and autumn, working with local schoolchildren who grow flowers from seed in the classroom and then plant them in the park. The group operates on roughly £1,000 a year, with every penny going directly to plants and supplies. They also run wildlife discovery activities for children.
Friends of Gosforth Central Park
Formed in 2013, this group meets every Monday 10am-12pm for volunteer sessions at Central Park (approximately 7 acres, opened 1932). Activities include litter picking, wildlife conservation, and community events like local history walks, wreath-making, and family fun runs. They've also fundraised to repair and replace play equipment. Find them on Facebook.
Friends of Paddy Freeman's Park
An active group for Paddy Freeman's Park covering litter picking, wildlife conservation, and fundraising for play equipment restoration. Contact friendsofpaddyfreemans@gmail.com for details on upcoming work sessions.
Town Moor Parkrun
Volunteering at Town Moor parkrun is one of the easiest ways to give back. Roles include course set-up, finish-line barcode scanning, and marshalling. No experience needed, families welcome, and under-18s can volunteer with an adult. Email townmoor@parkrun.com to sign up. The junior parkrun also needs volunteers.
NHSN — Gosforth Nature Reserve
The Natural History Society of Northumbria owns and manages Gosforth Nature Reserve — the oldest nature reserve in North East England, established in 1924. Volunteers work on conservation, lead events, inspire school groups, give talks, and help with publications. Training and equipment provided, plus exclusive annual events for volunteers. Register at nhsn.org.uk/register-as-an-nhsn-volunteer.
Gosforth Civic Theatre
Gosforth Civic Theatre offers volunteer and work experience opportunities including café roles and front-of-house placements, with a particular focus on supporting young people and learning disabled artists. Contact info@gosforthcivictheatre.co.uk.
Sports Clubs
[Northern RFC](https://northernfc.rfu.club/) at McCracken Park (founded 1875) has a dedicated Volunteer Co-ordinator. [Gosforth RFC](https://www.gosforthrugby.club/) welcomes volunteers of all abilities. The [Gosforth Sports Association](https://g-s-a.co.uk/) at Broadway West is run entirely by volunteers, managing playing fields for rugby, cricket, ultimate, baseball, and lacrosse. [Gosforth Harriers](https://gosforth-harriers.org/) (founded 1927) need help at athletic events — raking the long jump pit, moving hurdles, measuring throws. [South Northumberland Cricket Club](https://www.southnorth.co.uk/) at Roseworth Terrace (founded 1864) is another family-friendly club that welcomes volunteers.
Church Communities
[All Saints Gosforth](https://www.allsaints-gosforth.org.uk/) has a community of around 400 with regular groups including a Wednesday knitting group (10am) and a monthly men's group. [St Nicholas, South Gosforth](https://www.informationnow.org.uk/organisation/st-nicholas-anglican-church-gosforth/) is registered as an Eco Church with environmental volunteering. [St Charles Borromeo](https://stcharlesgosforth.org.uk/) runs community activities including flower arranging and bereavement counselling.
Litter Picking
South Gosforth Community Clean-Up runs monthly litter picks meeting on the green on Station Road opposite Thyme Square Café. Newcastle City Council can loan equipment (litter pickers, bags, armbands) to any group — contact lovewhereyoulive@newcastle.gov.uk or call 0191 278 7878.
Community Halls
[Gosforth Residents Association](https://www.gra.org.uk/) at Christon Road hosts carpet bowls, yoga, knitting, bingo, and more. [Gosforth Garden Village Association](https://ggva.co.uk/) at 6 Rosewood Avenue runs Zumba, Tai Chi, tennis, a volunteer-run lunch club, and community festivals.
Getting Started
[Volunteer Centre Newcastle](https://volunteercentrenewcastle.org.uk/) is the central hub for all volunteering opportunities in the city. [GoodGym Newcastle](https://www.goodgym.org/v3/areas/newcastle) combines fitness with volunteering — members run or cycle to practical tasks for community organisations, meeting every Monday at 18:15.
