Regent Centre Metro Set for £7.94m Summer Refurbishment
Regent Centre Metro and bus interchange is getting a £7.94m upgrade over the summer holidays — new ticket gates, canopy removal, and a nine-day line closure to the Airport in August.
Regent Centre Metro and bus interchange, one of Gosforth's busiest transport hubs, is undergoing a £7.94m refurbishment over the school summer holidays. For local commuters, that means a summer of changes to plan around — including a full stretch of line closed for nine days in August.
The upgrade is led by Nexus and delivered by contractor Kier. New automatic ticket gates have already been installed as part of a wider security programme, and the work also covers refurbished platforms and concourse areas, improved signage, and the removal of the ageing metal roof canopy at the entrance, which has become difficult to maintain.
What it means for your journey
The station is staying open throughout, so day-to-day travel from Regent Centre carries on largely as normal — but there will be some evening closures as work ramps up over June and July. If you regularly travel later in the evening, it is worth checking before you set off.
The bigger disruption comes with the canopy removal, running roughly from Thursday 23 July to Thursday 30 August. A large scaffold structure goes up at the site during this phase, and buses will be diverted: northbound buses will turn in the station and rejoin the Great North Road at the Regent Farm Road lights, while southbound buses heading into the city centre will use temporary stops on the Great North Road rather than pulling into the interchange.
The headline for Metro users is a nine-day line closure between South Gosforth and the Airport, from 15 to 23 August. This lets teams access parts of Regent Centre safely and carry out track maintenance. A frequent replacement bus — service 901 — will run between the Airport and South Gosforth in both directions, calling at or close to every station on the affected stretch.
Paul Welford, major projects director for Nexus, said the interchange "plays a vital role within Newcastle and connecting people to where they need to be."
Most major works are due to be completed by September, with final finishing touches expected through into 2027.
