Fat Hippo Jesmond

Newcastle's best-known independent burger restaurant. Creative burger menu, loaded fries, and shakes in a relaxed, fun setting.

About Fat Hippo Jesmond

Fat Hippo Jesmond on St George's Terrace opened in 2010 and kicked off what has since become a multi-site burger empire, though the original remains its spiritual home, having proved an independent burger restaurant could thrive in the North East. Every patty is made fresh daily using 100% Northumbria beef, served in a crispy brioche bun with an ever-changing roster of creative toppings, from the straightforward American burger to more adventurous seasonal combinations; vegan options, including the Five Lies burger, are genuinely good. The restaurant is properly child-friendly, with a varied kids' menu for under-12s that includes vegan choices, and dogs are welcome in the outdoor dining area and at selected indoor tables. The relaxed, fun atmosphere, free WiFi, and a 4.9 customer rating reflect consistent quality over more than a decade. It sits a four-minute walk from West Jesmond Metro, with on-street parking on St George's Terrace until 5pm.
