About This Event

Stephenson Steam Railway runs one of its Sunday heritage train ride days, with volunteer-operated trains taking passengers on a four-mile return trip along the historic route once used by coal trains running from the collieries to the River Tyne. Each journey lasts around 35 to 40 minutes in vintage 1950s passenger carriages. The museum is open 11am to 4pm, so there is time to explore the collection and meet Killingworth Billy, the world's third-oldest surviving steam locomotive. Rides are subject to availability, and wheelchair access to the carriages is not currently possible because of the narrow door openings.
