Barca Art Bar: Cocktails, Tapas and a Beer Garden on Gosforth High Street

With its hand-painted facade, a proper beer garden and — in our view — some of the best cocktails on the High Street, Barca Art Bar is one of Gosforth's most relaxed spots for a drink and a bite.

You can't miss it. While much of Gosforth High Street keeps things smart and understated, Barca Art Bar wears its personality on the outside — a shopfront hand-painted in pink, magenta and electric blue, all polka dots and loose abstract shapes. It's a bar that tells you exactly what kind of evening to expect before you've even walked through the door: colourful, unfussy and thoroughly laid-back.

A cocktail bar with an arty streak

Barca leans into the "art bar" name. Inside, the mood is warm and low-key rather than polished — the sort of place you can drop into after work in no particular hurry, or settle in with friends for the evening. It's the cocktails that keep us coming back, and in our opinion they're among the best on the High Street: properly made, generous, and a cut above what you'd expect from a neighbourhood bar. There's a well-chosen wine list too, and if you'd rather graze while you drink, that's where Barca really comes into its own.

Tapas, burgers and Sunday roasts

The kitchen keeps things broad and crowd-pleasing. The tapas menu is the heart of it — small plates like patatas bravas, homemade houmous with warm flatbreads, pan-fried king prawns in chilli and garlic, lamb koftas with tzatziki, halloumi fries and piri chicken, all "served in the traditional way, in no particular order, as soon as they're ready." You can pick any three for £15.99, or lean into it with the Get Tipsy with Tapas deal — a spread of tapas plus a bottle of house wine for £34.50, running every Wednesday and Thursday.

If you're after something more substantial, the gourmet burgers are the thing to order. Barca's bashed burger is a smashed beef patty with mozzarella and bacon; The Mexican adds spiced Cheddar, chorizo, salsa and jalapenos; and the newer breakfast burger piles on bacon, a runny egg, black pudding and spicy mayo. There's a char-grilled halloumi burger doused in honey for the veggies, and everything comes with triple-cooked chips or fries (sweet potato fries for £1 more).

On Sundays the focus shifts to roasts — matured silverside of beef cooked sous-vide low and slow for over 20 hours, roast chicken breast with stuffing, or pork loin with crackling, all with Yorkshire puddings, honey-roast carrots and parsnips, and seasonal veg. Roasts are £14.95, or two courses for £19.50 if you've room for a starter or pudding.

The beer garden

Round the back is one of Barca's best assets — a generous beer garden dotted with picnic tables, parasols and bright pink planters, backed by a hand-painted mural wall. On a warm Gosforth afternoon it's a genuinely lovely spot to work through a few tapas and a cocktail or two, and it's family- and dog-friendly enough for a relaxed weekend session.

Best for: Best for: cocktails and sharing plates in a colourful, unpretentious setting — and one of the better beer gardens on the High Street.
