Best Chinese Restaurants in Gosforth

One proper sit-down restaurant, a Hong Kong-style wok kitchen, and four neighbourhood takeaways. Here's the Chinese food scene in Gosforth.

Gosforth.org·

Gosforth doesn't have a Chinatown, but it does have a proper sit-down Chinese restaurant in a converted 1910 cinema, a Hong Kong-style wok kitchen on the High Street, and several neighbourhood takeaways that locals have relied on for years. Here's the guide.

Gosforth Palace

Gosforth Palace at 6A Salters Road is the standout — a full sit-down Cantonese restaurant in the beautiful old Globe Cinema building (opened 1910, closed as a cinema in 1961, later a bingo hall). The dining room is spacious and atmospheric, with a licensed bar and private room.

The menu covers the Cantonese classics done well — dim sum, duck and pancakes (served on a duck-shaped dish), chicken satay, Szechuan beef, and set banquet menus. Reviewers consistently praise it: one TripAdvisor regular called it "probably the best Chinese meal I have ever had." Lunch 12-2pm, dinner 5:30-11pm (Monday-Saturday), Sunday 12-11pm. Reservations via gosforthpalace.com or OpenTable. Expect around £20-30 per head.

Best for: Sit-down Chinese dining, dim sum, banquet menus, the beautiful cinema building.

Wokify Express

Wokify at 72 High Street is the closest to authentic wok cooking in Gosforth — the kitchen is run by Hong Kong Chinese wok chefs. Pan-Asian menu with Cantonese-influenced dishes: Honey Chilli chicken, Cantonese shredded beef, crispy seaweed, and vegan options. Primarily takeaway, available on Just Eat and Deliveroo. Open Tuesday-Sunday from 5pm.

Best for: Authentic Hong Kong-style wok cooking, delivery, vegan options.

South Gosforth Chinese Takeaway

South Gosforth Chinese at 46 Station Road has been a neighbourhood favourite for years. Family-run, classic Cantonese takeaway menu — salt and pepper chicken (frequently cited as the standout dish), crispy beef, king prawns. What sets it apart is an unusually strong gluten-free offering with dedicated gluten-free flour and a full allergy sheet on their website. On Just Eat. Open Tuesday-Sunday from 5pm.

Best for: Neighbourhood classic, salt and pepper chicken, gluten-free options.

Nice Noodle

Nice Noodle at 89 Great North Road does takeaway and delivery only — no eat-in. Combo box deals (2 mains, 2 sides, 2 spring rolls), salt and pepper dishes, Honey & Chilli chicken, and house special fried rice. Praised for generous portions and easy online ordering (minimum £20 for delivery, or call for smaller orders). Delivers across all NE3 and NE13. On Just Eat and Uber Eats. Open Tuesday-Sunday from 4:45pm.

Best for: Delivery combos, generous portions, wide delivery area.

Wai Ho

Wai Ho at 222 High Street is a straightforward Chinese takeaway — sweet and sour chicken, crispy duck, beef with green peppers, noodle and rice combinations. Orders via their own website with a 10% online discount. Open daily from 5pm.

Best for: Online discount, daily opening (no closing day).

Ashfield Chinese Takeaway

Ashfield Chinese at 47 Ashfield Road, NE3 4XL is a smaller neighbourhood takeaway serving the western side of Gosforth. Standard Chinese menu, on Uber Eats. Open from 5pm most days. Call 0191 285 3286.

Best for: Western Gosforth convenience.

A Note on Thai

There is currently no dedicated Thai restaurant in Gosforth. The nearest Thai options (Nadon Thai, Chaophraya) are in central Newcastle, a short Metro ride away. Wokify Express offers some Thai-adjacent dishes within its pan-Asian menu, but it's primarily Chinese.
