Best Playgrounds in Gosforth
From the big adventure playground at Paddy Freeman's to free tennis courts at Central Park, here's every playground worth knowing about in Gosforth.
When you need to get the kids out of the house and burning energy, a good playground is worth its weight in gold. Gosforth has several — ranging from a well-equipped adventure playground with a lake and cafe to smaller neighbourhood play areas with enough to keep toddlers happy for an hour. Here's the guide.
Paddy Freeman's Park
Paddy Freeman's Park is the main event for Gosforth families. The playground has equipment for different age groups — 4 toddler swings, a small climbing frame with slide, rocking animals, a play ship, and a bicycle roundabout for younger children, plus larger climbing multi-units and swings for older kids.
Beyond the playground, the park has a lake (popular for feeding the swans), a bowling green, two free tennis courts, and a seasonal cafe. It connects directly to Jesmond Dene on its south-west side, so you can extend a playground visit into a longer walk. Free entry, free parking nearby. An ice cream van is a regular visitor in warmer months.
Best for: The biggest and best-equipped playground, all ages, cafe and lake, connecting to Jesmond Dene.
Gosforth Central Park
The playground behind Gosforth Central shopping centre is a well-maintained, convenient option if you're already on the High Street. There's equipment for different ages, and the park also has two free tennis courts and a free basketball court. Etto on the Park cafe has its terrace overlooking the park — a handy combination of coffee for you and climbing for them.
The Friends of Gosforth Central Park volunteer group keeps the planting and landscaping in good shape. It's compact but well-designed — a quick green break without driving anywhere.
Best for: High Street convenience, free tennis and basketball, cafe overlooking the park.
Exhibition Park
Exhibition Park borders the southern edge of the Town Moor and has a newly redeveloped children's play area with modern equipment. There's also a pond, walks, and the Cafe in the Park for post-play refreshments. It's the starting point for Town Moor parkrun on Saturdays and junior parkrun on Sundays.
Slightly further from central Gosforth than the other options (a 15-minute walk from the High Street), but the play area is newer and the park has more space to run around.
Best for: Newer play equipment, parkrun starting point, Town Moor access.
Neighbourhood Play Areas
Beyond the main parks, several smaller play areas serve individual neighbourhoods:
Brunton Park has a small play area on the estate — practical for local families who don't want to walk to the High Street.
Melton Park has green spaces within the estate, though the main playground is at the nearby Gosforth Park First School (during non-school hours where access is available).
Check the Newcastle City Council play areas page for a complete map of play areas across the city.
