Council Services in Gosforth

From bin collections and council tax to road repairs, planning applications, and library services — a practical guide to the Newcastle City Council services that matter most to Gosforth residents.

Gosforth.org·

Gosforth is part of Newcastle upon Tyne and is served by Newcastle City Council. That means everything from bin collections and council tax to road repairs, street lighting, and planning permissions runs through the Civic Centre on Barras Bridge. Here is a practical guide to the council services Gosforth residents use most, with direct links to the relevant pages.

Bin Collections

Newcastle City Council operates a fortnightly alternating collection for wheeled bins. One week your green general waste bin is collected; the following week it is your blue-lidded recycling bin. Collections run Tuesday to Friday, and bins should be presented at the kerbside by 6.30am on your collection day.

To find out which day your bins are collected, enter your postcode on the council's bin day checker. You can also sign up for email or app reminders so you never miss a collection.

Best for: Not sure what goes in which bin? The council's what to put in your bins page has a full breakdown of accepted materials for recycling, general waste, and glass.

Garden waste is a separate, paid subscription service. The annual cost is £45 per bin, covering up to 20 fortnightly collections from spring through to autumn. You can register for the garden waste service online.

Council Tax

Council tax in Newcastle is set each year by the city council, Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner, and the Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Authority. Your bill depends on which valuation band your property falls into (A to H, based on 1991 property values).

Most properties in Gosforth fall in bands C to F, though there is a wide range. You can check your property's band on the Valuation Office Agency website. For the current year's charges, payment options, and any discounts or exemptions you may be entitled to, visit the council's council tax pages.

If you are a single occupant, you are entitled to a 25% discount. Students, people with certain disabilities, and some other groups may also qualify for reductions.

Road Repairs and Potholes

Gosforth's roads take a hammering — the Great North Road and Salters Road in particular. If you spot a pothole, a damaged kerb, or a problem with a pavement, you can report it directly to the council online. The form is available 24 hours a day, and you can track the progress of your report if you register an account.

Emergency hazards — such as a large pothole in a live traffic lane or a collapsed drain cover — should be reported by phone on 0191 278 7878 so they can be dealt with immediately.

Street Lighting

Faulty street lights across Newcastle and North Tyneside are reported through a shared service. You can report a faulty street light using an interactive map, selecting the exact lamp column on your street. You can also track the status of your report online.

Libraries

Gosforth Library on Regent Farm Road is a well-used community resource offering book lending, free public computers, Wi-Fi, children's storytimes, reading groups, and room hire. It sits alongside Gosforth Pool and Leisure Centre and the council's customer service centre.

Opening hours vary, so check the library page for current times. You can join the library for free, reserve books online, and access digital services including e-books and e-audiobooks through the BorrowBox app.

Newcastle also has a City Library in the centre of town, which is one of the largest public libraries in the North East.

Leisure Centres

Gosforth Pool and Leisure Centre on Regent Farm Road is managed by Better (GLL) on behalf of the council. It has a 25-metre swimming pool, a learner pool, a gym, and a programme of fitness classes. Swimming lessons, lane swimming, and family sessions are all available.

Membership and pay-as-you-go options are listed on the Better website. Concessionary rates are available for over-60s, under-16s, students, and people on certain benefits.

Planning Applications

If you want to build an extension, convert a loft, or make any significant change to a property in Gosforth, you will likely need planning permission from the council. You can search, view, and comment on planning applications through the council's Public Access portal. This lets you see what has been submitted, approved, or refused in your street or across the NE3 postcode area.

To apply for planning permission yourself, use the national Planning Portal or the council's planning guidance pages. For general enquiries, contact the planning team at planning.control@newcastle.gov.uk.

Parking Permits

Several streets in Gosforth — particularly around the High Street and near the Metro stations — are covered by residents' parking zones. If you live in one of these zones, you can apply for a resident parking permit online. You will need a current council tax statement showing your name and address.

Up to two permits are available per household, and visitor permits can also be purchased. For full details, costs, and eligibility, see the council's parking permits pages. For queries, email parkingpermits@newcastle.gov.uk.

Reporting Other Issues

Newcastle City Council's online reporting hub lets you report a wide range of issues beyond roads and potholes. These include fly-tipping, graffiti, abandoned vehicles, overflowing bins, noise complaints, dog fouling, and anti-social behaviour. You can also use the hub to report problems with parks, trees, and public spaces.

For anything not covered online, the general council contact number is 0191 278 7878.

Best for: Knowing which service to contact and where to find the right form. Bookmark the council's report a problem page — it covers almost everything in one place.
