Gosforth's FAB Bakery Heads to Freight Island, Newcastle's Biggest New Food Hall

A Gosforth bakery is about to reach a much bigger audience. FAB Bakery, the artisan bakery on Ashburton Road, is among the line-up at Freight Island Newcastle — the sprawling new food-and-drink destination opening in the city centre this June, billed as the UK's biggest hospitality opening of the year.

A Gosforth name on a citywide stage

FAB Bakery, known locally for its sourdough, breads and patisserie, will provide desserts and bakes at Freight Island. It joins a roster of around a dozen kitchens that mixes well-known Newcastle names — including I Scream for Pizza, Miso and Meat:Stack — with independents and national talent.

What is Freight Island?

Freight Island has transformed the former Debenhams department store in Eldon Square into a 60,000 sq ft venue for food, drink and live music, spread across several floors with a rooftop setting. Alongside the kitchens there are four bars and what the operator describes as a UK-leading sustainable wine programme. As reported by Get Into Newcastle, it opens in June 2026.
