Gosforth Driving Range
From a 28-bay floodlit range with Toptracer technology at High Gosforth Park to practice facilities at two nearby golf clubs, here is the complete guide to driving ranges in and around Gosforth.
If you want to hit golf balls without committing to a full round, Gosforth has you covered. The area's main driving range sits inside High Gosforth Park, barely two miles from the High Street, and there are practice facilities at two other clubs within easy reach. Here is the complete guide to driving ranges and golf practice near Gosforth.
High Gosforth Park Driving Range
High Gosforth Park Driving Range is the standout facility and the only full-size public driving range in the immediate Gosforth area. It sits within the grounds of Newcastle Racecourse at High Gosforth Park (NE3 5HQ), off the Great North Road.
The range has 28 floodlit bays, all fitted with high-quality mats and Srixon range balls, with multiple distance targets spread across the outfield. Ten of those bays are equipped with Toptracer Range technology -- the same system used in televised tour events. Toptracer tracks every shot you hit and displays the data on a screen in front of you: carry distance, ball speed, launch angle, and shape. You can also take on nearest-the-pin challenges, longest-drive competitions, and play virtual rounds on some of the world's most famous courses, all from your bay.
A basket of 100 balls costs around £6 on the standard bays, with Toptracer bays at a small premium. Books of range vouchers are available from the golf shop for regular visitors, offering a saving per session.
Opening hours: The range is open to the public seven days a week from 9am, with the floodlights extending evening practice through the darker months. Bays can be reserved online through the Newcastle Racecourse golf website, via the Elitelive app, or by calling the golf shop on 0191 236 3322.
Best for: Toptracer technology, floodlit evening sessions, walk-in or pre-book, families welcome.
Lessons and Coaching
High Gosforth Park has a team of PGA-qualified professionals on hand to help you improve your game. Individual lessons, group coaching, and structured beginner programmes are all available. Whether you are picking up a club for the first time or trying to iron out a persistent slice, booking a lesson at the range is one of the most efficient ways to improve.
Lessons can be booked through the golf shop or via the website. It is worth combining a lesson with a Toptracer bay so you can see the data behind your swing changes in real time.
Beyond the Range: Practice Facilities
The driving range is part of a larger complex at High Gosforth Park. Alongside the 28-bay range, you will find:
- An 18-hole golf course open to members and non-members year-round
- A short game area with chipping and pitching targets
- Putting greens for working on your short game
- An 18-hole mini golf course -- great for families, starting from around £4 for under-16s
The modern clubhouse serves food and drinks, so you can make an afternoon of it.
City of Newcastle Golf Club
City of Newcastle Golf Club on the Great North Road at Three Mile Bridge (NE3 2DR) has its own practice facilities including a driving range with both mat and grass hitting areas, a short game area, and putting greens. The club was founded in 1892 and moved to its current site in 1907, where the course was designed by Harry Vardon and later enhanced by Alister MacKenzie.
Visitors are welcome, and green fees are around £25 to £40 depending on the day. The practice facilities are a useful option if you want to warm up before a round or work on your game in a quieter setting. Contact the club on 0191 285 0700 or visit cityofnewcastlegolfclub.com for details.
Best for: Mat and grass range, short game area, visitors welcome, historic course.
Gosforth Golf Club
Gosforth Golf Club on Broadway East (NE3 5ER) does not have a driving range, but it does have a putting green and practice area that members and visitors can use. If you are looking for affordable visitor golf close to the High Street -- green fees start from around £16 for 18 holes -- it is worth knowing about. Book via the pro shop on 0191 285 3495 or at gosforthgolfclub.co.uk.
Best for: No driving range, but a putting green and the most affordable visitor green fees in the area.

Which Range Should You Choose?
High Gosforth Park is the clear first choice for most people. It is close, well-equipped, open to the public, and the Toptracer bays make practice genuinely engaging -- especially for beginners and younger golfers who enjoy the gamified challenges. If you are a more serious golfer preparing for a round, the City of Newcastle practice ground offers a quieter, more traditional warm-up environment with the option of hitting off grass.
For those willing to make a trip, Close House is the premium option with the best technology and coaching setup in the region.
