Gosforth pupils create a mental-health walking guide

A small group of Gosforth East Middle School pupils have turned a good idea into something the whole community can use, and it is already being noticed well beyond Tyneside.

From a school challenge to a real resource

The pupils, working under the team name Push & Pull, took part in The KEY+ Challenge, a youth programme run by the regional charity The Key that helps young people build confidence and turn their own ideas into projects that make a positive difference locally. Their project was a mental-health and wellbeing walking guide, a booklet setting out local walks alongside simple activities and exercises designed to get people outdoors and to make the most of the benefits fresh air and movement bring to how we feel.

A walk and a picnic for younger children

Rather than let the guide sit on a shelf, the group put it into practice. They organised and led a walk and picnic for younger pupils at the school, giving them a first taste of the outdoor wellbeing ideas the booklet promotes. As reported by Newcastle Magazine, the project has already drawn interest from a counsellor in Middlesbrough and an autism charity in Sunderland, both keen to create similar resources for the people they support.
