The Owl Tree Children's Cafe: Gosforth's Community Play Cafe for Families
Themed play sessions, messy crafts, a sensory room, and homemade food for families with under-5s -- all for just three pounds fifty a child at this not-for-profit community cafe near Coxlodge.
If you have a baby or toddler in Gosforth and you have not discovered The Owl Tree Children's Cafe yet, you are in for a treat. This not-for-profit community play cafe, housed in the former Coxlodge Methodist Church on the Kenton Road / John Street corner, has been a lifeline for local families since it opened in 2018 — and it has grown into something genuinely special.
What is it?
The Owl Tree is a themed play cafe for children aged 0 to 5. Each week brings a different theme — nocturnal animals one week, fairy tales the next — and the space is set up with crafts, messy play, role play, sensory activities, and interactive song time to match. There is a dedicated baby area with sensory equipment, an enclosed outdoor space backing onto the Broadway playing fields, and a sensory room for children who need a quieter, calmer environment.
The cafe runs as a Community Interest Company, which means it exists to serve families, not to make a profit. Its social mission is focused on tackling parental isolation in the early years — the loneliness that can come with being at home with a baby or toddler — and the impact that has on mental health.
What does it cost?
This is where The Owl Tree really stands out. Entry is just three pounds fifty per child, with siblings at one pound fifty, and adults go free. There is also a pay-it-forward scheme where you can gift a session or refreshments to another family in need — a small but powerful touch.
The cafe serves homemade food at very reasonable prices — breakfasts, pick-and-mix, cakes, and hot drinks. Nothing fancy, just good honest food at prices that do not make you wince.
Sessions and booking
The cafe runs multiple sessions daily, Monday to Saturday. Each session lasts around 90 minutes, giving children enough time to explore every activity without the day feeling rushed. Pre-booking online is recommended — same-day availability is posted on the Owl Tree Facebook page, but popular sessions fill up fast.
The top tip from parents who go regularly: wear clothes you do not mind getting messy. The clue is in the name — this is a place where children are encouraged to get stuck in.
The Community Nest
The Owl Tree has grown beyond the cafe into a wider project called the Owl Tree Community Nest. As well as the play sessions, the building now hosts classes, parent wellbeing groups, SEN sessions, drop-in support, and activities run by external providers including Tiny Toes Ballet. It has become a genuine community hub for families in the Gosforth, Coxlodge, and Kenton area.
