Arthur Miller's searing modern tragedy transports us to the tenement streets of 1950s Red Hook, Brooklyn, where longshoreman Eddie Carbone lives with his wife Beatrice and his orphaned niece Catherine. When Beatrice's cousins arrive from Italy as illegal immigrants and take shelter under his roof, Eddie's fierce, possessive devotion to Catherine curdles into something he cannot name or control. As desire, jealousy and betrayal collide, the play builds with the relentless inevitability of Greek drama towards a devastating conclusion. Narrated by the neighbourhood lawyer Alfieri, it is one of Miller's most tautly constructed works, weighing personal loyalty against the law and asking how far a man will go to protect his own idea of honour. The People's Theatre is one of the North East's great cultural institutions, an amateur company founded in Newcastle in 1911 that once counted W. B. Yeats and George Bernard Shaw among its admirers and correspondents. From its home on Stephenson Road in Heaton, it has built a reputation for ambitious, high-quality productions staged by dedicated volunteers, and this account of the Miller classic is a fitting showcase for that tradition. Concession tickets are available for over-60s on Pension Credit, students, under-16s and unwaged patrons, and season passes and group discounts are offered through the box office.
