About This Event

One of the North East's most spectacular New Year traditions, the Allendale Tar Bar'l sees 45 costumed guisers with soot-blackened faces carry burning whisky barrels of tar on their heads through the town, following a band. Only men born in the Allen Valleys can take part. Crowds gather in the town centre from 11pm, the barrels are lit at around 11:30pm, and the procession reaches the bonfire at midnight, when the barrels are thrown on with the cry "Be damned to he who throws last". There is no need to book.
