About This Event

The John Pope Quintet is one of the North East's most distinctive jazz outfits, led by Newcastle-based double bassist, composer and improviser John Pope. First assembled in 2016 to perform a tribute to the late Ornette Coleman for Jazz North East, the group quickly became Pope's main vehicle as a bandleader. This chordless, all-acoustic quintet draws on 1960s free jazz and hard bop with a thoroughly modern sensibility, taking inspiration from the likes of Ornette Coleman, Charles Mingus and the Art Ensemble of Chicago, shot through with a DIY alternative-rock attitude. Alongside Pope, the line-up features Jamie Stockbridge (alto and baritone saxophone), Faye MacCalman (tenor saxophone and clarinet), Graham Hardy (trumpet and flugelhorn) and Johnny Hunter (drums), and the band has released acclaimed albums including 'Mixed With Glass' and 'Citrinitas'. Opening the evening is Urvashi, an artist connected to the region's jazz and improvised-music scene. Expect an evening of hard-grooving, anything-goes energy music from a band at the heart of the North East's thriving improvised-music community.
