Best Beer Gardens in Gosforth

South-facing sun traps, heated terraces, and possibly the largest beer garden in Newcastle. Here's where to drink outside in Gosforth.

Gosforth.org·

The first sunny day of the year and suddenly every Gosforth pub garden is packed. Some are genuine sun traps, some are heated and covered for year-round use, and one claims to be the largest beer garden in Newcastle. Here's the guide.

Three Mile — The Most Equipped

The Three Mile on Great North Road has the most comprehensively equipped outdoor setup in Gosforth. The heated outdoor terrace has a stretch tent canopy for weather protection, booth-style seating, umbrellas, and outdoor screens showing live sport. Food is served outside — including New York-style pizza from the on-site restaurant. Dog-friendly. Named North East Pub of the Year 2023.

Best for: All-weather outdoor drinking, live sport outside, food and drink in one spot.

The Millstone — South-Facing Sun Trap

The Millstone in South Gosforth has a large, south-facing beer garden — the best orientation for catching the sun from lunchtime through to evening. A marquee provides cover when the weather turns. Dog-friendly and child-friendly, with function space for up to 70. Near South Gosforth Metro and Jesmond Dene.

Best for: Maximum sunshine, south-facing aspect, covered option.

Brandling Arms — West-Facing Evening Sun

The Brandling Arms on the High Street has a large, west-facing front garden set back from the road. Spacious decking with large umbrellas for shade. The west aspect means it catches the late afternoon and evening sun — perfect for after-work drinks. Food is served outside, and dogs are always welcome with water bowls on arrival. Recently refurbished.

Best for: Evening sun, spacious decking, dog-friendly, High Street location.

Brandling Villa — Best for Dogs

The Brandling Villa in South Gosforth has a smaller, lit beer garden at the rear. What sets it apart is the dog welcome — this is one of Newcastle's most celebrated dog-friendly pubs. Dogs get fresh water bowls, their own Pooch Menu, alcohol-free dog beer, and "Beggs" doggy sausage rolls. The garden is cosier than the others on this list, but the craft beer selection and burgers make up for it.

Best for: Dog owners, craft beer lovers, intimate garden.

Northumbrian Piper — The Biggest

The Northumbrian Piper in Fawdon claims to have the largest beer garden in Newcastle. The front garden of this mansion-style pub is genuinely huge, with a children's play area — making it one of the few Gosforth beer gardens where kids can run around. Something of a hidden gem on the western edge of the area. Dog-friendly, food served, and there's live music too.

Best for: Families (play area), sheer size, hidden-gem feel.

Gosforth Hotel — High Street Classic

The Gosforth Hotel on the corner of High Street and Salters Road has a dedicated beer garden plus street-side seating in summer. Dog-friendly (treats and water provided), with a strong real ale range featuring local breweries — Mordue, Wylam, Tyne Bank, and Anarchy among others. Children welcome until 7pm when dining.

Best for: High Street convenience, real ale, summer street-side seating.

Queen Victoria — The Quiet Option

The Queen Victoria at 206 High Street has a rear garden — less well-known than the bigger venues, making it a quieter option on busy days. Dog-friendly "come rain or shine." A solid community local with pub classics and weekend food.

Best for: Avoiding the crowds, rear garden, quiet drink.

The County — Greene King Garden

The County at 70 High Street has a pleasant garden in a handsome 19th-century sandstone building. Good range of real ales (Cask Marque accredited), dog-friendly, and the outside area reportedly works in all weathers. Sky Sports and BT Sport for outdoor match-watching.

Best for: Real ale, historic building, all-weather claim.

Worth the Trip — Ouseburn

If you're willing to venture slightly beyond Gosforth, the Cumberland Arms in the Ouseburn has a spectacular herb-filled garden overlooking the valley, and the Tyne Bar has its famous beer garden beneath the road bridge — heated, covered, with food served daily. Both are dog-friendly and about 10 minutes from South Gosforth by car or Metro.
