Football is part of the fabric of life in Newcastle, and Gosforth is no exception. Whether you are looking for a junior club for your child, a Sunday league team to join as an adult, a 5-a-side pitch for a midweek kickabout, or simply a good pub to watch the match, there is plenty on offer right on your doorstep.

Here is our guide to football in and around Gosforth.

Team Gosforth FC — Junior and Youth Football

Team Gosforth FC is one of the largest junior football clubs in the area, with over 300 young players across teams from Under-7s through to Under-18s. Founded in 2013 by Lee Sterry, the club grew out of demand from parents whose children had been attending his coaching sessions, and it has expanded rapidly since.

All teams are FA Charter Standard and compete in the Pinpoint Recruitment Junior Football League. The club has partnerships with Gosforth Academy and Newcastle University, which means young players train and play on high-quality pitches at Gosforth Academy and Newcastle University's Longbenton Sports Ground and Cochrane Park.

If your child is interested in joining, the best route is through the club's website or their Facebook page, where new player trials and training sessions are regularly posted.

Best for: Children and teenagers aged 6–18 looking for competitive, well-organised junior football with qualified coaching.

Gosforth Bohemians FC — Newcastle's Oldest Amateur Club

Gosforth Bohemians FC holds a remarkable distinction: founded in 1894, it is Newcastle's oldest amateur football club. Originally formed on Leazes Terrace in the years before Newcastle United called St James' Park home, the Bohemians have been based at Benson Park in the Brunton Park estate (NE3 2EJ) since 1951.

The club fields three adult teams. The first team plays in the Northern Football Alliance First Division, the reserves compete in the Tyneside Amateur League, and a third side plays in the Corinthian First Division. The club went through a difficult period around 2000 when player numbers dwindled, but was reborn in 2001 and has been thriving since, helped by a Football Foundation grant that secured its long-term future at Benson Park.

If you are an adult looking to play Saturday afternoon football at a genuine grassroots club with over 130 years of history, the Bohemians are a brilliant option. New players are always welcome — contact the club through their Facebook page.

Best for: Adult players looking for Saturday league football at a friendly, historic community club.

Goals Newcastle — 5-a-Side at High Gosforth Park

For a midweek kickabout or a regular league, Goals Newcastle at High Gosforth Park (NE3 5HP) is the go-to venue. Located on the Newcastle Racecourse site, the facility has multiple 3G astroturf pitches with floodlights, making it usable year-round and into the evening.

Goals offers pitch hire for 3-a-side, 5-a-side, 7-a-side, and 8-a-side games, as well as organised leagues running throughout the week. There is also a clubhouse with a sports lounge showing live football — so you can stay on after your game and watch the professionals. Children's football parties are available too, with 90-minute coached sessions followed by time in the party area.

You can book pitches online or by calling 0191 217 3040. If you are looking to join a league rather than organise your own team, Goals can help place individuals into existing sides.

Best for: Groups of mates wanting a regular 5-a-side game, or individuals looking to join a midweek league.

Powerleague at Gosforth Academy — 6-a-Side Leagues

Powerleague Newcastle Gosforth operates from Gosforth Academy on the Great North Road (NE3 2JH), offering 6-a-side football on floodlit pitches. The venue runs organised leagues — including a popular Monday evening men's 6-a-side — as well as casual pitch hire.

Powerleague is a good option if you prefer a slightly larger format than 5-a-side, and the Gosforth Academy location is convenient for anyone in the NE3 area. Booking is available online or by calling 0800 567 0757.

Best for: Players who prefer 6-a-side football and want an organised league with a fixed weekly slot.

Watching Football — Gosforth's Best Pubs for Match Day

If playing is not your thing — or you need somewhere to watch the match after your own game — Gosforth has several pubs that show live football on big screens.

The Gosforth Hotel on the High Street is the most sport-focused pub in Gosforth. With HD screens throughout and a lively atmosphere on match days, it is the natural choice for anyone who wants to watch Premier League, Champions League, or international fixtures while enjoying a pint and some proper pub food. Open seven days a week from 11am.

The County at 70 High Street is another strong option. This handsome Greene King pub carries both Sky Sports and TNT Sports, so between the two pubs you are unlikely to miss a televised game. The County is slightly more spacious and relaxed than some alternatives, with a good beer garden if you want to step outside at half-time.

For a more relaxed setting, The Brandling Arms at 176 High Street has screens showing sport alongside its excellent food menu and beer garden — a good pick if you are watching the match with family rather than a group of lads.

Best for: The Gosforth Hotel for the full match-day atmosphere; The County for a wider range of channels in a more spacious setting; The Brandling Arms for a family-friendly viewing experience.

Getting Involved

Football at every level is thriving in Gosforth. For children, Team Gosforth FC offers a clear pathway from age 6 upwards with qualified coaching and competitive fixtures. For adults, Gosforth Bohemians provide proper Saturday league football at a club with genuine history, while Goals and Powerleague make it easy to organise a casual game or join a midweek league without any long-term commitment.

And if all that sounds like too much effort, you can always grab a seat at The Gosforth Hotel, order a pint, and let someone else do the running.
