Gosforth.org·

Gosforth sits in something of a golfing sweet spot. Within a few minutes' drive you have four proper courses — from a championship heathland layout designed by Colt and Braid to a friendly parkland club where visitors can turn up and play for under £20. Add a floodlit driving range with Toptracer technology and an 18-hole mini golf course, and there's something for every level.

Gosforth Golf Club

Gosforth Golf Club on Broadway East (NE3 5ER) is the most accessible course in the area — a well-maintained parkland layout in a secluded, leafy setting just three miles from the city centre. The Northern Golfer Magazine has described it as a "stunning course minutes from Newcastle."

Visitors are welcome every day, with green fees ranging from £16–£30 for 18 holes — some of the most affordable in the area. Equipment hire is available (trolley £3, electric trolley £10, buggy £25). You can book tee times online or call the pro shop on 0191 285 3495. Membership options include 7-day, 5-day, associate, junior, and social.

Best for: Affordable visitor golf, a friendly club, convenient location.

The Northumberland Golf Club

The Northumberland Golf Club at High Gosforth Park is the area's premier course — a unique heathland layout designed in golf's Golden Age by Harry Colt and James Braid. The course was established in 1898 and the fairways weave in and out of Newcastle Racecourse, making for a distinctive and memorable round.

The clubhouse, built in 1913, is set in a magnificent position nestled into the surrounding woodland, with a bar, lounges, dining room, and sun terrace. The course regularly hosts Pro-Ams, national and regional championships, including The Open Regional Qualifier. This is a private members' club, so visitor access is more limited — check the website or call ahead.

Best for: Championship-quality golf, a prestigious course, special occasions.

City of Newcastle Golf Club

City of Newcastle Golf Club relocated to its current site at Grange Farm, near the Three Mile Bridge in Gosforth, in 1907. The course was originally designed by the great Harry Vardon and enhanced by Alister MacKenzie (designer of Augusta National) in 1913 — a remarkable pedigree for a suburban course.

The par-72 course stretches to 6,444 yards, and visitors are welcome every day. Green fees are around £25–£40 depending on the day. The clubhouse has an excellent bar, lounge, and restaurant. A proper golf club with genuine heritage, and more accessible than the Northumberland.

Best for: A course with serious design pedigree, visitor-friendly, good clubhouse.

High Gosforth Park Golf Club

High Gosforth Park Golf Club is the most family-friendly option, with three facilities in one. The 18-hole course is open to members and non-members year-round. But the real draw for casual golfers and families is the 28-bay floodlit driving range — 10 bays equipped with Toptracer Range technology, which tracks your shots and lets you play virtual courses. Book via the Elitelive app.

There's also an 18-hole mini golf course starting from just £4 for under-16s (around £4.50 for adults) — no booking required, just turn up. The modern clubhouse rounds it out. It's a great option for families, beginners, and anyone who wants to hit some balls without committing to a full round.

Best for: Driving range with Toptracer, mini golf, families, beginners.
