Spotlight: Bobiks
An intimate 60-seat venue in the restored ballroom above The Punch Bowl in Jesmond — live music, comedy, theatre, cinema, and art exhibitions in a beautifully refurbished space.
Above The Punch Bowl Hotel on Jesmond Road, a 150-year-old ballroom has been given a second life. Bobiks is a 60-seat venue that transforms from intimate music space to comedy club to cinema throughout the week — and it is one of the most characterful small venues in Newcastle.
The space
The first-floor ballroom lay disused for years before its refurbishment in 2019. The renovation kept the original ballroom charm — high ceilings and period details — while adding a proper stage, automatic curtains, and a cinema screen. The result is a space that feels both historic and contemporary, intimate enough that every seat feels close to the action.
What is on
The programming is eclectic and adventurous. Live music covers folk, jazz, indie, and acoustic acts. Stand-up comedy nights bring both emerging and established performers. Film screenings offer an alternative to multiplex viewing. Art exhibitions and creative workshops round out a programme that defies easy categorisation.
Practical details
The venue has an age restriction of 16+ (under 18s must be accompanied by an adult), and there is a standard 11pm noise curfew. Capacity is just 60, so booking in advance is recommended for popular events.
