Spotlight: Ouseburn Farm
A free city farm welcoming over 40,000 visitors a year — sheep, goats, pigs, chickens, a cafe, gardens, and seasonal events just a mile from Newcastle city centre.
A working farm in the middle of a city sounds improbable, but Ouseburn Farm has been proving it works for decades. Located in the Ouseburn Valley just a mile from Newcastle city centre, this community-led project welcomes over 40,000 visitors a year — and it is completely free to enter.
The animals
The purpose-built barn and surrounding fields provide a home for sheep, goats, pigs, and chickens. A small animal room houses rabbits and guinea pigs. Reptiles add an unexpected element. During lambing season, ticketed lamb feeding sessions are one of the few paid activities — everything else is free.
Beyond the animals
The farm is more than just animals. An orchard, community garden, and nature activities provide year-round interest. Seasonal events run throughout the calendar — Easter activities, summer open days, and Christmas events draw families from across Newcastle.
The cafe
An on-site cafe means you can make a proper morning or afternoon of a visit without needing to leave. Hot drinks, light bites, and homemade cakes fuel the trip.
Practical details
Located on Ouseburn Road (NE1 2PA), the farm is family-friendly, accessible for pushchairs and wheelchairs, and free to visit. It is about a fifteen-minute drive from Gosforth, or reachable by bus. A genuine treasure that costs nothing but a bit of time.
