Spotlight: The Job Bulman
Named after a Georgian-era doctor who shaped Gosforth's early development, this Wetherspoons occupies a handsome former council building with one of the biggest beer gardens in the neighbourhood.
Not every pub needs to be a gastropub to earn its place on the high street. The Job Bulman, Gosforth's Wetherspoons on St Nicholas Avenue, has been doing the basics well for years — affordable food, a solid range of real ales, and a building with genuine character.
A building with history
The pub occupies a former council building dating from 1928 that served Gosforth and district for over fifty years before its conversion. The handsome exterior has been well preserved, and inside the original features give the space a sense of scale that most chain pubs lack. The name itself honours Job Bulman, a respected doctor who returned from India at the end of the eighteenth century, built the now-demolished Coxlodge Hall, and sold plots along the High Street — the cottages built there were long known as Bulman Village.
What to expect
The real ale offering goes beyond the usual Wetherspoons core range. Up to six guest beers are regularly available, often sourced from local established breweries and microbreweries across the North East. The pub holds both Cask Marque and LocAle accreditation, which means the quality and provenance of what is in the glass can be trusted.
Food is the standard Wetherspoons menu — reliable, affordable, and served from early morning through to late evening. The pub opens at 8am daily.
The beer garden
The large beer garden is arguably the main draw in summer. It is one of the biggest outdoor drinking spaces in Gosforth and fills quickly on sunny days. A raised family area inside provides space for those with children.
Whether you are after a cheap weekday pint, a no-fuss breakfast, or a sunny afternoon outdoors, the Job Bulman delivers exactly what it promises.
