Gosforth.org·

Gosforth has quietly become one of the best neighbourhoods for brunch in Newcastle. The combination of specialty coffee, inventive kitchens, and a walkable High Street means you can spend a very pleasant Saturday or Sunday morning hopping between cafes without ever getting in a car. Here's the definitive guide.

Baby Grey

Baby Grey at 75 High Street is the headline act. Featured in National Geographic's Best Breakfasts in the UK, this is the brunch spot that people travel across Newcastle for. The signature hummus eggs were independently voted the 5th best breakfast dish in the UK, and the eggs on sourdough with confit tomatoes are equally acclaimed.

The menu is inventive without being pretentious — think banana bread French toast, sourdough toasties with locally sourced ingredients, and granola bowls done properly. The coffee is specialty-grade, and the cafe is fully licensed with wines, cocktails, and craft beers if you're in that kind of mood. Expect queues at weekends — arrive early or be prepared to wait. Monday–Friday 8am–4:30pm, Saturdays 9am–12:30pm.

Best for: The brunch everyone's talking about, specialty coffee, inventive dishes.

Cake Stories

Cake Stories at 117 High Street is primarily known for its celebration cakes, but don't overlook the brunch. The eggs Benedict and fluffy pancakes draw queues at weekends, and the display counter is always piled high with fresh croissants, brownies, and seasonal pastries. It's one of those cafes where you go for coffee and end up staying for a full meal.

The afternoon tea is also worth knowing about for a special occasion. Tuesday–Saturday 9–5, Sunday 10–4, closed Mondays.

Best for: Eggs Benedict, pancakes, pastries, afternoon tea.

Ardens Kitchen

Ardens Kitchen at Dobson House, Regent Centre is the hidden gem — most people walk straight past it. The full English (£10.95) is generous, the AK47 Breakfast (£14.95) is a double-everything monster, and the avocado on toast comes plain or loaded with feta, chorizo, or eggs. Sandwiches are well-priced between £4.95 and £5.50.

The kids' area with Pac-Man and colouring keeps little ones busy, and its location next to Gosforth Pool makes it a natural post-swim brunch. Monday–Friday 8am–4:30pm, Saturday 8am–2pm, Sunday 10am–2pm. See our full review.

Best for: Full English, families, post-swimming brunch, the hidden gem.

Deli Espresso

Deli Espresso at 3A Salters Road has been a Gosforth staple since 2011. The coffee is locally roasted and consistently good, and the brunch menu leans healthy — food boxes, salads, smoothies, and strong vegan and vegetarian choices alongside more traditional options. They also run a bottomless brunch which is worth investigating.

A relaxed, well-established cafe with a loyal following. Monday–Friday 8:30am–5pm, Saturday 9am–4pm, closed Sundays.

Best for: Healthy brunch, vegan/vegetarian options, bottomless brunch, locally roasted coffee.

Etto on the Park

Etto at 33 The Gosforth Centre is the hidden terrace option. Tucked inside the shopping centre, it opens onto an outdoor terrace overlooking Gosforth Central Park — one of the nicest spots in Gosforth for a coffee in the sunshine. The all-day brunch covers pancake stacks, smoked salmon bagels, avocado toast, and the cakes and doughnuts are hard to resist. Half-price refills on second coffees. Monday–Saturday 8–5, Sunday 9–4.

Best for: Outdoor terrace, park views, families, a sunny morning.

Cafe Beam

Cafe Beam in the beautifully converted Old Fire Station at 234-236 High Street does a solid brunch menu — cooked breakfasts, sandwiches, jacket potatoes, and daily specials in a space with real character (high ceilings, original architectural features). Run in partnership with Smile For Life charity. Monday–Saturday 9–4, Sunday 10–3.

Best for: A characterful setting, community feel, the top end of the High Street.

Cafe 1901

Cafe 1901 in the Trinity Centre is the reliable everyday option — open seven days a week, dog-friendly, with outdoor tables. The menu covers breakfasts (the brioche sausage patty is a favourite), sandwiches, soups, and excellent milkshakes. It's not the trendiest cafe in Gosforth, but it's consistent, welcoming, and genuinely handy. Monday–Saturday 9:30–5:30, Sunday 9:30–5.

Best for: Sunday brunch (one of the few open), dog walkers, families, reliability.

The brunch crawl: Start at Baby Grey for the headline dish, walk to Cake Stories for a pastry, then finish at Gosforth Traders for a mid-morning cocktail. Total distance: about 200 metres. Total calories: don't ask.
