Best Bakeries and Cake Shops in Gosforth
Artisan sourdough, almond croissants, bespoke celebration cakes, and three Greggs. Here's where to buy bread, pastries, and cakes in Gosforth.
Gosforth has quietly become one of the best suburbs in Newcastle for artisan baking. Three independent bakeries now sit within walking distance of the High Street, alongside cafes with serious cake games and specialist celebration cake makers. Here's the full picture.
Pink Lane Bakery
Pink Lane Bakery is tucked away at the rear of the Old Fire Station on the High Street — through the arch at 232-236 High Street, NE3 1HH. One of three Newcastle branches (the original opened in 2012), everything is made in-house using traditional techniques.
The sourdough is the headline — Pink Lane Sourdough and Seeded Sourdough are available daily. The almond croissants and cinnamon buns have a loyal following, and the sausage rolls and pies are excellent. They also do custom celebration and wedding cakes with a minimum 3 days' notice, available to order online or in person.
Open Monday-Saturday 8am-4pm. Items sell out early — arrive before 10am for the best selection.
Best for: Sourdough, almond croissants, celebration cakes, artisan quality.
PureKnead
PureKnead in the Gosforth Shopping Centre started as a Tynemouth market stall in 2015 and now has three branches. Their traditional 48-hour sourdough uses only flour, water, and salt — no additives or improvers. Also pastries, cakes, savouries, and coffee.
Open Wednesday-Sunday 8:30am-3:30pm.
Best for: Purist sourdough, no-nonsense ingredients, shopping centre convenience.
FAB Bakery
FAB Bakery at 27 Ashburton Road, NE3 4XN (their second location after Fenham) specialises in artisan pastries — croissants, pain au chocolat, and pain au raisin baked fresh daily, with Friday and Saturday patisserie specials. They also bake white sourdough, ciabatta, and Pugliese bread.
The associated FAB Cakes brand does bespoke wedding cakes, celebration cakes, cupcakes, macarons, and cake pops. Contact hello@fabbakery.co.uk or 07920 585510 to order.
Open Wednesday-Thursday 8:30am-4pm, Friday 9am-5pm, Saturday 9am-3pm. Closed Sunday-Tuesday.
Best for: French pastries, weekend patisserie specials, custom celebration cakes.
Cafes with Great Baking
Caffe 1901 on the High Street has an in-house baker making all cakes fresh daily — the cabinet is always well-stocked with impressive cakes and tray bakes catering for multiple dietary requirements. Open Monday-Saturday 9am-5pm.
Thyme Square Cafe at 5 Station Road in South Gosforth is a warm neighbourhood cafe known for homemade cakes alongside breakfasts, wraps, and salads. Open Monday-Saturday 8am-4pm.
[Gosforth Traders](/directory/gosforth-traders) at 151-153 Salters Road is an artisan coffee house and deli with cakes, scones, and gluten-free pastry options. Dog-friendly and pushchair-friendly. Open daily with extended Friday and Saturday evening hours.
Cafe Beam in the Old Fire Station (same complex as Pink Lane Bakery) is a social enterprise run by Smile for Life Children's Charity. Home-cooked food and cakes, Thursday-Saturday 10am-4pm.
Custom Celebration Cakes
Beyond Pink Lane and FAB Cakes, [Sugar Art Cakery](https://sugarartcakery.co.uk/) is a Gosforth-based studio producing bespoke celebration, wedding, and corporate cakes described as "edible art." Collection by appointment. Call 07792 734620.
Greggs
