Dog-Friendly Gosforth: Pubs, Cafes, Parks, and Walks

From pubs with dog menus and treat jars to 1,000 acres of off-lead moorland, here's the complete guide to Gosforth with your dog.

Gosforth.org·

Gosforth is a brilliant place to have a dog. The Town Moor gives you a thousand acres of open grassland, Jesmond Dene offers wooded trails along the river, and a growing number of pubs and cafes don't just tolerate dogs — they actively welcome them with water bowls, treats, blankets, and even dedicated dog menus. Here's the complete guide.

Dog-Friendly Pubs

The Brandling Villa

The Brandling Villa in South Gosforth goes further than most — they have an actual dog menu (including "paw patties") and sell dog beer. Water bowls are always out, and dogs are welcome throughout the pub and beer garden. Given the Villa also has one of the best beer gardens in Newcastle, this is the natural first stop for any dog walk that ends in South Gosforth.

The Brandling Arms

The Brandling Arms on the High Street is super dog-friendly — blankets, treats, and water bowls are provided. The sheltered outdoor terrace is a comfortable spot for dogs and owners alike, and the staff genuinely make a fuss of four-legged visitors.

The Queen Victoria

The Queen Victoria at 204 High Street welcomes dogs with water bowls and has carpeted areas for comfortable settling. The rear beer garden is dog-friendly too. A good range of cask ales makes it a solid reward after a Town Moor walk.

The County

The County at 70 High Street is dog and family friendly, with the spacious beer garden to the rear offering plenty of room for dogs to settle while you enjoy a pint from their guest ale selection.

The Three Mile Inn

The Three Mile on the Great North Road welcomes dogs and has outdoor seating where dogs can relax. Good for families who want to combine a pub meal with a dog-friendly atmosphere.

The Cumberland Arms

Over in Ouseburn, The Cumberland Arms is dog-friendly throughout, including the legendary beer garden overlooking the valley. Seven real ales and folk music most nights — a perfect end to a longer walk.

Dog-Friendly Cafes

[Gosforth Traders](https://gosforthtraders.com/) on Salters Road is dog-friendly — dogs are welcome inside while you enjoy artisan coffee or an evening drink. The relaxed atmosphere suits well-behaved pups.

[Cafe 1901](https://1901caffe.co.uk/gosforth/) in the Trinity Centre welcomes dogs and even has outdoor tables — a reliable everyday cafe for dog walkers.

[Cafe Beam](https://www.facebook.com/cafebeamnewcastle) at the Old Fire Station on the High Street is popular with dog walkers and families. The community feel makes it a relaxed spot.

[Bunns of Brunton](https://bunnsofbrunton.com/) in Brunton Park welcomes dogs, and the secret garden out the back is a lovely setting for a coffee stop with your pup.

Dog Walks

Town Moor

The Town Moor is the big one — over 1,000 acres of open grassland where dogs can run freely. The flat tarmac and grass paths are easy going, and the sheer scale means there's always space. One important note: cattle graze from April to October, and dogs must be kept under close control during this period. Outside of cattle season, it's one of the best off-lead spaces in any English city.

The 5km parkrun loop (Exhibition Park entrance, anti-clockwise) is a popular dog walking circuit. See our walks guide for detailed routes.

Jesmond Dene

Jesmond Dene is a 3km+ wooded valley following the River Ouseburn — shaded, scenic, and popular with dog walkers year-round. Dogs are welcome throughout and most walk off-lead on the wider paths. The river provides natural water stops for thirsty dogs. Paths can be muddy after rain, so expect dirty paws in winter.

The 3.4km Jesmond Dene to Paddy Freeman's circular is a great dog walk — see our walks guide for the full route.

Paddy Freeman's Park

Connected to Jesmond Dene, Paddy Freeman's Park has open green space, a lake (dogs love watching the swans), and paved paths. Dogs should be on leads near the playground and lake.

The Grove

The Grove between Elmfield Road and Moor Road North is a smaller, quieter green space popular with local dog walkers. Mature trees, wildflower areas, and a peaceful atmosphere — a nice quick walk when you don't want the scale of the Moor.

Gosforth Central Park

The park behind the shopping centre is a convenient dog walking spot if you're already on the High Street. Dogs should be on leads near the playground.

A Note on Gosforth Park Nature Reserve

Gosforth Park Nature Reserve does not allow dogs — this is to protect the wildlife. If you're planning a nature reserve visit, leave the dog at home.

The dog walker's day out: Start with a walk on the Town Moor or through Jesmond Dene, stop at Cafe 1901 or Gosforth Traders for a coffee, then finish at the Brandling Villa or Brandling Arms for a pint in the beer garden. Your dog will probably sleep the whole evening.
