Churches in Gosforth
From a Grade I listed medieval church to a converted Methodist chapel with a community cafe, here is your guide to the churches and places of worship in Gosforth.
Gosforth has a rich tradition of Christian worship stretching back over 850 years. From the medieval foundations of All Saints to a thriving community church and cafe on the High Street, there are churches of several denominations within easy reach — each with its own character, history, and role in the community.
Here is our guide to the churches and places of worship in Gosforth.
All Saints Church
All Saints Church on West Avenue (NE3 4ES) is the oldest building in Gosforth and the spiritual heart of the community. Founded in the 1170s during the reign of Henry II, it is Grade I listed — the highest level of heritage protection in England, shared with buildings such as Westminster Abbey and York Minster.
The church is an active Anglican parish within the Diocese of Newcastle. Sunday services are held at 8am, 9:30am, and 6:30pm. The building has been rebuilt and extended many times over its long history, with Norman foundations overlaid by later medieval work, Victorian restoration, and 20th-century additions.
Beyond worship, All Saints plays a central role in Gosforth life. The church hosts the popular monthly Gosforth Farmers Market, Little Saints toddler group on Tuesday afternoons, and the Sing at the Centre group. The peaceful churchyard, with its mature trees and centuries-old headstones, is one of the most tranquil spots in the area.

Best for: Heritage, community events, the Gosforth Farmers Market, and a beautiful churchyard.
St Nicholas Church
St Nicholas Church on Church Road (NE3 1BJ) is the parish church of Gosforth and another of the area's most established Anglican congregations. The parish is believed to date from Saxon times, though the current building was consecrated in 1799, designed by architect John Dodds. John Dobson — the celebrated Newcastle architect responsible for much of the city centre — enlarged the church in 1820 in the same Georgian classical style. Further extensions followed in 1912 and 1959.
The main Sunday service is at 10am, with a Prayer Book Holy Communion on Thursdays at 10am and an evening service on the first Sunday of each month. St Nicholas is linked to Archbishop Runcie Church of England First School, named after Robert Runcie, the former Archbishop of Canterbury who began his ordained ministry at this church.
Best for: Georgian architecture, strong parish community, and links to Archbishop Runcie First School.
Trinity Church and Centre
Trinity Church on the High Street (NE3 4AG) is one of the most visible and active churches in Gosforth. Formed in 2000 by the uniting of three congregations — Methodist and United Reformed — Trinity occupies a handsome building originally constructed as a Methodist church in 1877 and designed by Septimus Oswald and Son.
Sunday worship is at 10:30am, with a Young Church running for children and teenagers. Communion is celebrated on the third Sunday of each month. The church also hosts an active Farsi-language worship service.
What sets Trinity apart is the Trinity Centre and Cafe, a community hub in the heart of the High Street. The centre offers rooms for hire, hosts clubs and groups, and the cafe provides a welcoming space for locals and visitors. Trinity is a gathering place in the broadest sense — as much a community centre as a church.
Best for: Central High Street location, community cafe, and a welcoming atmosphere for families.
St Charles Borromeo RC Church
St Charles Borromeo on Church Road (NE3 1TX) is Gosforth's Roman Catholic church, part of the Diocese of Hexham and Newcastle. The parish serves the Catholic community across Gosforth and the surrounding area and welcomes people of all faiths and none.
Mass times are Saturday Vigil at 5pm, Sunday at 9am, and weekday Mass Monday to Friday at 9:30am. Confessions are heard on Saturdays from 4:30pm to 4:55pm and on Sundays from 8:30am to 8:55am. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is available Monday to Friday at 8:45am.
The church is closely linked to St Charles' Catholic Primary School, which was named Sunday Times North East Primary School of the Year in 2025 and is one of the top-performing state primaries in England.
Best for: Regular Mass schedule, weekday services, and links to St Charles' Primary School.
St Hugh's Church
St Hugh's Church on Hepple Way, on the northern edge of Gosforth towards Fawdon, is a smaller Anglican church within the Diocese of Newcastle. The Sunday service is at 11am.
St Hugh's serves a quieter residential area and has a more intimate, neighbourhood feel than the larger Gosforth churches. It is a good option for those living in the northern part of Gosforth or on the Fawdon border who want a local congregation close to home.
Best for: Neighbourhood church with an intimate feel, convenient for north Gosforth and Fawdon.
Regent Chapel
Regent Chapel on Regent Farm Road (NE3 3HD) is an independent evangelical church in a residential setting. The chapel describes itself as a friendly, growing community of ordinary people who meet regularly to worship God, study the Bible, and serve the north Newcastle area.
Regent Chapel runs a Christians Against Poverty (CAP) debt centre, offering free debt counselling and support to anyone in the area, regardless of faith. The chapel's residential location gives it a warm, informal character quite different from the larger churches on the High Street.
Best for: Independent evangelical worship, informal setting, and free debt support through CAP.
A Note on Gosforth's Church Heritage
Gosforth's churches are not just places of worship — they are woven into the fabric of the community. Church halls host baby and toddler groups, scout troops, martial arts classes, and community meetings. The Gosforth Farmers Market takes place on All Saints' grounds. Trinity's cafe is a High Street fixture. St Charles' primary school is one of the best in the city.
Whether you are looking for a church to attend, a hall to hire, or simply a quiet place to sit for a few minutes, Gosforth's churches are open and welcoming.
