Christmas in Gosforth 2026
A guide to Christmas in Gosforth: the High Street tree lights, Santa visits, festive shows at the Civic Theatre, carol services, markets, parking and the Metro over the holidays, with confirmed 2026 dates.
Gosforth does Christmas on a neighbourhood scale. There is no council parade or big-name switch-on, but the High Street lights up, the Civic Theatre fills its December diary, churches hold carol services and a handful of pubs and clubs book in Santa. This guide covers what usually happens each year, and which 2026 dates are confirmed as of early November.
The High Street lights
Gosforth's Christmas lights are a recent, privately run tradition. In 2024 Sanderson Young, the estate agent on the High Street, organised the first #lightupGosforth evening: Christmas trees fixed in brackets at first-floor level along the High Street, switched on at 5.30pm on Friday 29 November outside its office on the corner of Hawthorn Road. Children from St Oswald's Hospice pressed the switch and the Newcastle School for Boys choir sang carols. The organisers reported around 80 trees and over 450 people.
It came back on Friday 28 November 2025. Sanderson Young put the crowd at nearly 1,000, with 77 trees, St Oswald's children on the switch again and choirs from both the junior and senior schools. Several places stayed open late with mulled wine and festive food, including Babucho, Baby Grey, Etto on the Park, Kult and Osters by Lovage.
The 2026 date is to be confirmed. Nothing had been announced by early November. Both previous switch-ons were on the last Friday of November, and the 2024 one was announced only four days ahead, so keep an eye on Sanderson Young's news page from mid-November.
Best for:
Best for: a free early-evening outing with carols, mulled wine and the High Street at its most festive.
Christmas markets
Gosforth has no big Christmas market of its own. The farmers market at All Saints Church on West Avenue is on Saturday 21 November 2026, and Newcastle's Christmas Market runs from 19 November to 23 December, ten minutes away by Metro. The Civic Theatre's what's on page also lists Sister Shack's Yuletide Market on Saturday 12 December. Our Christmas markets in Gosforth guide has the full details, plus day trips to Durham and North Shields.
Meeting Santa
Several local venues have confirmed Santa visits for December 2026:
- Storytime with Santa at Gosforth Civic Theatre, a half-hour story session for children up to ten with a gift for each child, on selected dates from 5 to 22 December.
- Breakfast with Santa at The Three Mile on Great North Road, on 5, 6, 12 and 13 December, with elves' games and a pancake and waffle station.
- A Meet Santa family day at South Northumberland Cricket Club on Saturday 12 December from 1pm, with a story, a disco and a chance to meet him.
All three need booking. Gosforth Garden Centre at Gosforth Park had not published any grotto dates when we checked, so ring ahead if you were planning on one there.
Shows at the Civic Theatre
The Civic Theatre is the centre of festive entertainment in Gosforth. There is no traditional pantomime on its 2026 listings, but the December programme is busy:
- A Christmas Carol on Monday 7 December at 7.30pm, with Adam Z. Robinson playing all 28 characters in a one-man version of Dickens.
- The Snow Queen of Spitsbergen, 18 to 20 December, a sensory winter show from Blanket Fort Club for young children and disabled children with complex needs.
- The Smoove and Turrell Xmas Party on Friday 11 December, for adults.
- Sip Into Winter, a festive wine and cheese fundraiser on Thursday 3 December.
For a full family pantomime, the People's Theatre in Heaton is staging Beauty and the Beast from 12 December.
Carol services
Gosforth's churches all hold Christmas services, though most had not published their 2026 times by early November. In past years All Saints has held a Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols on Christmas Eve, St Nicholas on Church Road has held a family crib service and a candlelit service with its choir, and Trinity Church has held community carol singing on the square as well as its own carol services. Check each church's website in December for this year's times.
Festive nights out and family days
- Festive candle and cocktails evenings at The Brandling Arms on 26 and 28 November.
- Wreath making at South Northumberland Cricket Club on 28 November.
- Festive afternoon tea at The Three Mile from 12 December.
- The Christmas Jumper Racenight at Newcastle Racecourse on 12 December, with eight floodlit flat races.
- The Baldy Holly Christmas Party at Northern Football Club on 12 December.
For a quieter day out, Jesmond Dene is on Gosforth's southern edge, with Pets Corner for younger children and Jesmond Dene House for something warmer afterwards. Our walks from Gosforth guide has routes for a Boxing Day leg-stretch.
New Year's Eve
South Northumberland Cricket Club is holding a New Year's Eve party on 31 December. We will add other confirmed Christmas and New Year events to our events calendar as they are announced, and the what's on this weekend page is the quickest way to see what is happening each December weekend.
Parking and getting around
Parking is easiest in the evening: almost all of Gosforth's car parks are free after 6pm, and the Regent Centre car park costs £1 for the whole day. Our guide to parking in Gosforth has the full list.
The Metro does not run on Christmas Day, and in recent years Boxing Day has had a reduced, Sunday-style service. Nexus publishes the full festive timetable for Metro and buses in December on the Nexus website, so check before planning a late night in town.
